No-Kill Policy
No-kill defines an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full. We reserve euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety. The Bangor Humane Society works hard every day to ensure we give every animal that comes through our doors a fair chance at finding a perfect match.
We do not euthanize animals because they have been with us too long or if we have too many. We only consider euthanasia as an option if an animal is unpredictable and could be a threat to people, other animals, or themselves in a home environment.
We work hard with our veterinary partners to provide the best medical care possible to animals in our facility. If there is nothing that a veterinarian can do to make an animal comfortable, and they no longer have a quality of life, then we will consider euthanasia.
